Pedestrian deaths in India rose 7.29% to 35,221 in 2023, up from 32,825 in 2022, the Road Transport Ministry said. Pedestrians accounted for 20.4% of total fatalities, with two-wheeler riders most at risk. Overall road deaths rose to 1,72,890, with young adults (18-45) forming 66.4% of victims, while 83.4% were within the broader working-age group of 18-60 years.
