The Goa government told the Supreme Court-constituted Central Empowered Committee (CEC) that "the mere presence of a few transient tigers passing through the area" does not necessitate declaring the area as a tiger reserve. In July 2023, the High Court of Bombay at Goa directed the government to notify a tiger reserve in Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary and other contiguous areas.
