The Supreme Court held that under Section 4 of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021 (UP Conversion Act), permitting initiation of criminal proceedings at the instance of strangers dilutes the freedom of religion. It said that the criminal law cannot be allowed to be made a tool of harassment of innocent persons.
