A rare 'gigantic jet' phenomenon was captured by an astronaut from ISS on July 3, NASA confirmed. Earlier, it was thought to be a 'sprite'. Gigantic jets are a powerful type of electrical discharge that extends from top of a thunderstorm into the upper atmosphere. They appear when turbulent conditions at towering thunderstorm tops allow for lightning to escape thunderstorm.
