A study by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) found that Red Sea completely dried up around 6.2 million years ago, becoming a salt basin disconnected from the Mediterranean. The dry phase lasted about 1,00,000 years until a powerful flood from Indian Ocean breached volcanic ridges, opening Bab al-Mandab strait and reconnecting Red Sea to world oceans.
