Researchers at US' Binghamton University have developed a way to convert food waste into biodegradable plastic. Researchers fed Cupriavidus necator bacteria with lactic acid fermented from food waste and ammonium sulphate. The bacteria generated polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) plastic, which can be harvested and shaped into biodegradable products. Food waste up to a week old can be used to create PHA.
