Russia has appointed Marina Starovoytova as the world's first-ever female captain of a nuclear-powered icebreaker. The appointment came as the nation marked 80th anniversary of its atomic industry. Starovoytova worked as Russian language and literature teacher in a rural school before starting her maritime career. She has over 20 years of experience on both commercial vessels and icebreakers.
