Russia is reviving Soviet-era tactics like forced psychiatric treatment and torture to crush dissent and anti-war voices, UN expert Mariana Katzarova said. Since start of Russia-Ukraine war, Moscow has passed stronger laws to punish dissenters, she said. Katzarova gave example of journalist Maria Ponomarenko whom she says was made to undergo compulsory psychiatric treatment for anti-war stance.
