Russia may increase value-added tax to fund its war in Ukraine

Russian Finance Ministry has proposed raising the value-added tax (VAT) from 20% to 22% starting January 1, 2026, to help fund military expenditure amid ongoing war in Ukraine. The ministry stated the tax increase aims to support the defence budget, military salaries, and the modernisation of defence industries. Earlier this month, Russia confirmed that peace talks with Ukraine have paused.
