Researchers at Kyoto University has discovered a protein complex called STAG3-cohesin that organises DNA in sperm stem cells, revealing links between fertility and cancer. In mice, sperm stem cells cannot mature properly without this protein, leading to infertility. In humans, this protein is highly expressed in certain immune cells and cancers, and blocking it slowed tumour growth in the lab.
