Serbian scientists are experimenting with mealworms to degrade polystyrene. These larvae have been adapted over a long time to biodegrade plastic. The bacteria in the mealworms' guts break down plastic into carbon dioxide and water, leaving no microplastic residue. Boris Vasiljev said that larvae emit significantly less carbon dioxide compared to incineration when breaking down polystyrene.
