Scientists find brain chemical tied to trauma and depression

Neuroscientists found elevated SGK1, a brain chemical linked to depression and suicidal thoughts in people who faced childhood trauma. They also found that children exposed to early life adversity who possessed gene variants that increase SGK1 in the brain were more likely to develop depression as teenagers. The findings suggest drugs that inhibit SGK1 may potentially prevent or treat depression.
