Scientists solve mystery behind chameleon's 360-degree vision

Researchers have found that long, coiled optic nerves help chameleons rotate their eyes almost 360 degrees. These nerves develop straight in embryos and coil before hatching, according to CT scans of several species. Because of the additional length provided by the coiling, the eyes can move freely and smoothly while locking together to focus on prey.
