Scientists have discovered a hidden layer of bony skin structures, osteoderms, beneath the scales of Australia's monitor lizards (goannas), as per a new study. Osteoderms are found to occur in nearly half of all lizard species worldwide, an 85% increase on earlier estimates, it added. While osteoderms may provide protection, scientists suspect they may also support heat regulation and mobility.
