Once rich in natural springs, Shillong now depends on water tankers as forests disappear, rainfall reduces, and springs dry up. Rapid urbanisation and deforestation have changed recharge zones, leaving borewells empty. Despite Meghalaya's high rainfall, mismanagement and climate change have left the "Scotland of the East" parched and reliant on private water sellers.
