Sickle cell disease is a genetic disease which changes the haemoglobin in red blood cells. Dr Heena reports that sickle-cell disease remains a major challenge in India, particularly among tribal populations where access to care is often limited. However, progress is emerging through newborn screening, hydroxyurea therapy and the government's national mission.
