A study using virtual reality found that simply seeing someone contagious can trigger immune responses. When participants saw infectious avatars, their fMRI scans showed stronger links between the brain's threat-detection network and hypothalamus. Innate lymphoid cells, early responders that alert other immune cells in blood, were also activated, suggesting visuals prepare the body for infection.
