A new study published in Biogeochemistry shows that warming soil alone does not automatically increase carbon dioxide emissions. Microbes in soil need both accessible carbon and nutrients to release more CO2 when temperatures rise. Experiments on subtropical soil in Georgia revealed that without sufficient organic matter, extra heat had little effect.
