New Zealand spotty, or paketi, can begin changing sex from female to male within minutes when a dominant fish is removed from group, according to University of Otago study. While the full sex change process takes weeks, the second-ranked fish initiates the change almost immediately to take advantage of the power vacuum and assert dominant behaviours, study's lead author said.
