Scientists have documented California ground squirrels hunting and eating rodents for the first time, overturning their reputation as herbivores. Observed in Briones Regional Park, this behaviour suggests squirrels are opportunistic omnivores. During June and July 2024, researchers witnessed squirrels actively pursuing voles in 42% of their encounters with the smaller rodents.
