Actor-director Anupam Kher spoke about how Shah Rukh Khan "went unrecognised" for his work in many films over the years. He said, "You can imagine his disappointment — for 'Swades', he 100% should've got the National Award." He added, "So many other performances, like 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge', went unrecognised. Each time, he must have felt upset."
