A 19-year-old marketing student had her arms and legs amputated after what began as "fresher's flu" turned out to be meningococcal septicaemia, a rare but life-threatening blood infection. The condition can progress rapidly, causing sepsis, organ failure, and tissue death. Meningococcal septicemia is a severe blood infection caused by the Neisseria meningitidis bacterium.
