A study has found 4,000-year-old human teeth with traces of betel nut. The researchers analysed 36 plaque samples from six people buried at a site in Thailand and found the chemical compounds arecoline and arecaidine, which are found in betel nut. This is the earliest direct evidence of betel nut's use in Southeast Asia, the study's senior author said.
