Researchers at EMBL Barcelona have shown how the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, damages the brain's protective blood-brain barrier, leading to swelling and severe complications in cerebral malaria. Using a 3D lab-grown model, they found the barrier becomes leaky but noted that the approved drug Ruxolitinib may help reduce damage and improve outcomes.
