India's Ujjwala scheme aimed to provide clean cooking fuel (LPG) to poor households, improving health and reducing drudgery. A study revealed an environmental co-benefit, large-scale forest greening. By reducing dependence on firewood, the scheme inadvertently allowed forests to recover, demonstrating how social welfare programs can also contribute significantly towards eco-restoration.
