Consumption of soft drinks, supplemented with white sugar, alters gut bacterial DNA and impacts the immune system, according to a study published in Nature. Sugar consumption causes DNA inversions in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, which maintain the gut's mucus layer and prevent pathogen invasion. This leads to changes in inflammatory markers of immune system, including in T-cell populations.
