For over 50 years, the sigma cycle has taught that sigma factors detach from RNA polymerase after initiating gene transcription. This study provides robust evidence that this isn't universally true. In Bacillus subtilis and a specific E. coli mutant, the sigma factor remains stably bound, challenging a foundational concept in microbiology and opening new questions about bacterial gene control.
