Indian politician and leader of the oppressed classes, Dakshayani Velayudhan, belonged to the Pulayar community and was amongst the first generation of people to be educated from her entire community. She held various distinctions, like becoming one of the first women from her community to wear an upper cloth and the first Scheduled Caste woman graduate in India.
