A new study at University of Texas states that mineral-rich clay layers found on Mars suggest that it once harboured life-hosting environments in ancient past. Clay needs water to form, and the layers found may date back to roughly 3.7 billion years. Researchers noted that the clay could be a sign of imbalanced water and carbon cycle on ancient Mars.
