According to a new study published in Cell, modern potatoes evolved from a wild tomato ancestor around eight to nine million years ago. Scientists discovered that wild tomatoes in the Andes hybridised with a tuberless plant called Etuberosum, giving rise to the potato lineage. "Tomato is the mother [of potato] and Etuberosum is the father," said lead researcher Sanwen Huang.
