The Supreme Court held that the rights of the tribals and forest dwellers are protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and the Forest Rights Act, 2006 even after declaration of an area as a Wildlife Sanctuary. It banned mining activities within an area of one km from National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries, noting that such activities will be hazardous.
