US President Donald Trump has announced that he is putting Washington DC's Metropolitan Police Department under federal control and deploying the National Guard. Invoking the DC Home Rule Act, Trump said he's taking this "historic action" to rescue the capital from "crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor". "This is Liberation Day in DC...we're going to take our capital back," he added.
