Animal welfare activist in Uttarakhand, Gauri Mulekhi, has rescued thousands of equines who face neglect and abuse on pilgrimage routes. The death of her pet in the 1990s due to lack of veterinary care opened her eyes to the world of animal welfare. Since then, Gauri has opened an equine sanctuary in Uttarakhand to provide refuge to disabled, injured animals.
