New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) researchers have spotted an ultra-rare pink robust grasshopper near Lake Tekapo in the Mackenzie Basin. "Pink grasshoppers are exceptionally rare. It is likely caused by a genetic mutation called erythrism, which results in an overproduction of red pigment and less of the usual natural pigment that the species has," DOC ranger Jen Schori said.
