Scientists from Barcelona University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, and Stony Brook University discovered that ice can produce electricity when bent or deformed, a property called flexoelectricity. At extremely low temperatures, ice becomes ferroelectric, with a polarised surface. The findings suggest future applications in sensors, detectors, and energy-harvesting devices in icy environments.
