Uruguay has become the first Latin American country to legalise euthanasia. Euthanasia allows seriously ill patients to legally obtain help to end their lives. Uruguay is a predominantly Catholic country and the most opposition to euthanasia in the country came from Catholic Church which expressed sadness on the decision and called on Uruguayans to "defend the gift of life".
