China is battling a surge in mosquito-borne viral disease chikungunya, with nearly 7,000 cases reported in the southern province of Guangdong. The virus causes fever and severe joint pain, which sometimes can last for years. US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a Level 2 alert for Americans travelling to China, advising them to practice utmost caution.
