The US on Wednesday minted the last penny, as it ended the production of one-cent coins after over 230 years. US Treasury said rising production costs and rapidly changing consumer habits and technology had made production of pennies unnecessary. Most of the pennies were sitting in jars or junk drawers, and each one was costing nearly 4 cents to make.
