US has penalised two Chinese firms, GMC Semiconductor Technology (Wuxi) Co and Jicun Semiconductor Technology, that acquired country's chipmaking equipment for Chinese chipmaker SMIC, according to a US government posting. The two firms have been added to Commerce Department's restricted trade list. SMIC was already on the restricted trade list, and shipping US equipment to them requires licenses.
