Venus' winds race around it at extreme speeds due to solar heat
short by Swati Dubey / on 01 Dec 2025,Monday
Venus' upper atmosphere superrotates, with winds exceeding 100 m/s outpacing the planet's surface rotation. This is strongly driven by its thermal tides, diurnal tides, which complete one cycle each Venusian day, and semidiurnal tides, which complete two cycles a day. Recent findings suggest that diurnal tides, driven by solar heat, majorly contribute to the extreme speeds of Venus' winds.
