Researchers at Pennsylvania State University have developed a strong, biodegradable clothing fibre from waste yeast left after making beer, wine, and pharmaceuticals. Proteins were extracted from the yeast, dissolved in a solvent, and forced through a spinneret to create continuous fibres. The resulting fibre is reported to be stronger than natural fibres and can be produced for $6 per kilogram.
