Hanging glaciers are ice masses that form high on a glacier valley wall and extend only partway down, without connecting to main glacier below. These glaciers are unstable and sensitive to climate change. Researchers suspect that such a hanging glacier feeding Kheer Ganga channel triggered August 5 Dharali flash floods. Researchers have mapped 219 such glaciers in nearby Himalayan basins.
