A University of Toronto study has revealed that children living with dogs between the ages of five and 15 are associated with a healthier gut microbiome and reduced risk of developing Crohn's disease. The study hasn't been able to determine how a dog's presence reduces the disease's risk. It also found that living with a bird increases the disease's risk.
