High level of "bad" low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and low level of "good" high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol are risk factors for heart attacks. A family history of heart disease can raise a person's heart attack risk. High blood pressure, diabetes and obesity are also risk factors. The risk increases due to conditions such as congenital abnormalities of the coronary arteries.
