Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose and this is used up by cells to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which powers metabolism, explained nutritionist Namita Satheesh. If body doesn't get enough glucose from carbs, proteins from muscle can be broken down for ATP, leading to loss of muscle mass. Completely cutting out carbs would mean inadequate fibre intake, affecting gut health.
