When two supermassive black holes collide, they release gravitational waves in the fabric of spacetime, as predicted by Albert Einstein in 1916, along with light, mainly in the form of X-rays. The collision creates a larger black hole, more massive than either of its parents. After the collision, jets of particles may be launched at the speed of light.
