Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that police fired at the Badlapur sexual assault accused Akshay Shinde in self-defence. Speaking at the India Today Conclave, Shinde stated, "Had he fled, the Opposition would have asked if the (police) guns were merely showpieces." "[The Opposition] would have said that we allowed him to escape," added Shinde.
