In psychiatry, affect is the observable expression of emotion, the doctor’s glimpse into a patient’s inner state through tone, facial expression, and gestures. Unlike mood, which is long-lasting, affect changes moment to moment. It may be normal, restricted, blunted, flat, labile, or inappropriate. Assessing affect helps understand emotional congruence and diagnosis better.
