"Brain rot" has been announced as Oxford Word of the Year 2024, amid concerns over people endlessly scrolling and watching social media content. It is defined as "supposed deterioration" of one's mental/intellectual state, especially due to overconsumption of online content which is "trivial or unchallenging". Its first recorded use was in poet-philosopher Henry David Thoreau's 1854 book 'Walden'.
