Alpha-gal syndrome, which is said to be spreading globally, is a tick-borne allergy to a sugar molecule found in most mammals like cows and pigs. It's triggered by bites from ticks like the Lone Star tick. It causes delayed reactions to red meat, dairy and sometimes medications. Symptoms may include hives, nausea, severe stomach pain and difficulty breathing, among others.
